The photos above show why the Move Over law is so important. FHP Trooper, Darryl Haywood was writing a citation on the shoulder of Florida's Turnpike, when a pickup truck rear-ended his patrol car. It took rescue crews 30 minutes to extricate the trooper from his patrol car before he was airlifted to the hospital with serious head injuries. Trooper Haywood is expected to make a full recovery.

Safety

Move Over
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) urge motorists to help protect the people who protect you – please move over and let emergency workers do their jobs without risk of injury or worse. Safety on the highway begins with drivers behind the wheel. It’s everyone’s job.

Florida's Move Over law requires motorists to move over and away from stopped emergency vehicles whenever possible or to slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit. Emergency vehicles include police cars, ambulances, tow trucks and other responders. Motorists can be ticketed if they fail to move over.

The Move Over law protects law enforcement officers and other emergency workers.

  • Motorists are required to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped along the highway with its lights flashing.
  • When traveling on a multi-lane highway, move away from the emergency vehicles.
  • If changing lanes safely is not an option, drivers must slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit or to 5 mph when the speed limit is 20 mph or less.
